Frequently asked questions
Hey Atu lets Claude, ChatGPT and other AI apps work on your own computer, even from your phone. Answers to common questions.
What it is
What is Hey Atu?
A remote MCP server that runs on your own Mac or Linux computer. You add it as a connector (https://heyatu.com/mcp) in an AI app such as ChatGPT or Claude. After you allow the app, it can find files, run commands and edit files on that computer.
Which AI apps work?
We have tested ChatGPT (Plus and higher; web, desktop and phone apps), Claude (the free plan allows one custom connector; web, desktop and phone apps), Codex and Claude Code, and on the desktop Doubao and Qwen.
Which computers are supported?
Mac, and Linux with systemd. Windows is not supported yet.
Which model does the work? Do I need an API key?
Your AI app’s own model, under your plan with that app. You need no API key. Hey Atu adds tools, not a model.
Is it only for code?
No. It works with any task that files and commands can do: find a document, tidy a folder, rename photos, sum up notes, check a log, or run tests.
Does it work with Skills?
Yes. A Skill tells your AI app how to do a task, and these tools let it do the task on your computer. Hey Atu does not add Skills of its own.
What is Pi?
Pi is the open-source coding agent whose tools Hey Atu uses. The installer sets it up for you, or uses the Pi you already have. You do not need to know it.
Using it
Can I use it from my phone?
Yes. Add Hey Atu once on the computer, then ask in the ChatGPT or Claude phone app with the same account. See Use your computer from your phone.
Does my computer have to stay on?
Yes, on and online while you use it. On a Mac, Hey Atu stops idle sleep while it runs; closing the lid still sleeps the computer. While it sleeps, your AI app shows an error.
How long can one task run?
One tool call has about 3 minutes. For a longer job, ask the AI to start it in the background and check the result later.
Do I need Tailscale or a VPN?
No. Your computer connects out to our relay. You do not open any inbound port.
Can it see my screen?
No. It works with files and commands. It does not see or click your screen.
Can I use more than one computer?
Yes. One plan covers up to 3 computers, Mac or Linux.
Safety and data
Can it change or delete my files?
Yes, when the AI app asks. The tools run commands and write files with your user account’s permissions. Allow only apps that you trust, and run heyatu mcp off to stop every app at once.
Who can see what the AI does?
The AI app’s provider, under its own policy, because the calls come from its cloud. Our relay forwards them and does not store or log them. Your computer keeps a list of calls. See Security.
How is this different from OpenClaw?
OpenClaw is an open-source assistant that you host yourself. Hey Atu adds tools to the AI apps you already use, with no gateway to run. See Hey Atu vs OpenClaw.
Price
How much does it cost?
Each account gets 100 free actions without a card. Then you can start a 7-day free trial. The plan is US$192 a year or US$20 a month; while the limited-time offer lasts, it is US$76.80 a year (US$6.40 a month) or US$8 a month, and you keep that price until you cancel. One plan covers up to 3 computers. Details on Pricing.
How do refunds work?
If you change your mind within 3 days of your first payment, write to support@heyatu.com and we refund it in full.
The Hey Atu iPhone app
Is there a Hey Atu iPhone app?
Not on the App Store yet; it is coming soon. Today, ChatGPT and Claude on your phone can already use your computer.
What will the iPhone app add?
Four tabs: Chats, To-do, Updates and Wiki. In Chats you can continue a chat from your computer. What the app and your computer send each other is end-to-end encrypted.
